Today, a client came in with “Jacked Up Brows”. They are naturally a great shape and perfect for her face shape! However, she lives farther away from me than she cares to drive, for “just a brow wax”. So, between facials, she will go to other shops that take walk ins to get them done quickly, rather than spend the extra time on herself to ensure a professional brow wax.
Well, quicker is not better, or even equal in many cases! Her left brow was 1/4″ shorter than the other, and both were thinner than her face shape dictates. The left brow was 1/2 the width of the right. GASP!!! I asked if she tweezed and had a mishap. Well, unfortunately, an “expert” did them. My client is now in “Eyebrow Therapy” so we can recreate brows that match each other and her facial features.
Why does this happen? Well, let me share with you three stories illustrating the possibilities, all of which I experienced personally. These illustrations are common, as I know of many shops that allow everyone in their employ to wax clients, no matter their specific field of expertise or credentials.
My first story involves a couple I worked for early in my career. They owned nail shops and a spa. We were busy in the spa one day, and no one was available to do a leg wax. Well, the male owner, who was a construction worker, took the client, and waxed her legs!! He had no training. When I asked him about the incident, his response surprised me. “Waxing is easy. You just rip the hair off! Nothing to it”. All I could think was, “WOW”!
Second incident, was a friend who was a nail technician that decided to get her esthetics license, also. This was so she could legally provide esthetics services to clients coming into the nail salon she worked in. Unfortunately, every technician in the shop, whether licensed for esthetics or not, was put on rotation for these services. She moved her practice and now works in a spa, because of the deceptive practices of that shop.
Finally, I taught advanced classes in eyebrow design and waxing procedures to estheticians for four years. One of my students enrolled for two classes: brazilian wax and eyebrow design. She wouldn’t participate in the class. Upon further investigation, I found out she was a salon owner, not a licensed esthetician. She was there to get the eyebrow design and brazilian waxing certificates to hang in her shop, not to perform services! Do I need to explain why she wanted to display them? I think you know the answer.
I am sharing these stories with you so that you understand the importance of making sure the person performing services on you is a licensed professional for that service. Even better, check to see if they have advanced certification in the particular service. If they can’t provide a license or certification with their name on it, please go elsewhere. There are so many things that can happen, many worse than just “jacked up brows”. You could become burned, infected, or worse! I am a licensed esthetician with many advanced certifications. Please contact me for further information on my credentials. I will be happy to share them with you!
